US President Obama meets Dalai Lama
Kathmandu, 19 Feb. (Dainikee)
The US President met the exiled spiritual leader of China, Dalai Lama on Thursday at the White House. While the two leaders was said to talk about democracy, human rights and Tibet’s religious identity and culture, China on the other hand, has lodged a formal complaint regarding the meeting to the American ambassador, Jon Huntsman.
Obama seemed supportive to Dalai Lama in a written statement where he stressed the need of the preservation of the culture and the Tibet’s religious identity. The meeting with the spiritual leader was put off last year so as to not disturb the President’s trip to Beijing. Dalai Lama is internationally honored spiritual leader who has also been awarded with the Nobel Prize.
Obama’s this decision is said to weaken the ties of the two countries as said by Ma Zhaoxu, spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
The meeting was kept at a low profile and reporters were not allowed to enter until the meeting was over. Dalai Lama expressed that he was happy with the meeting to the reporters later.
Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader for Buddhists was exiled from China. He has
been trying to return to China to advocate the cultural and religious freedom for his followers.
