Alexander McQueen commits suicide

Kathmandu, 12 Feb. (Dainikee)

British fashion designer Alexander McQueen whose creations have been adorned by celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Rihanna and Lady Gaga has committed suicide in his London apartment.

His company's communications director, Samantha Garrett, said that McQueen’s body was found on Thursday morning, days after he posted anguished online remarks about the death of his mother.

The 40 year old millionaire was renowned for his flamboyant and sometimes outrageous styles. The designer's death just days before the London fashion week has left the fashion world shocked.

McQueen has been awarded four times as the British Designer of the Year between 1996 and 2003. He was also awarded the CBE in 2003. The openly gay fashion designer even described himself as “the pink sheep of the family.” He grew up in London’s East End as the son of a taxi driver. He got his degree from Central St Martins College of Art and Design and after his graduation, he set up his own label in the East End.

He has raised uproars in the tabloids and made his name with his sock tactics including his infamous ‘bumster’ trousers. He also earned himself the title of “the hooligan of English fashion.”

He even succeeded John Galliano as the head designer at Givenchy in 1996. After which he joined forces with Gucci who bought 51% of his company in 2001. By the end of 2007, Alexander McQueen had boutiques in New York, London, Los Angeles, Milan, and Las Vegas.
