Late monsoon brings fears of food shortages
LALITPUR, 5 July
Every year, Nepalese rice farmer Ratnakaji Maharjan celebrates the arrival of the monsoon rains by attending a centuries-old festival in this historic town near Kathmandu.
The annual event, in which a huge chariot said to carry the Hindu rain god Machchindra Nath is pulled through the streets of Lalitpur, draws crowds from across the Kathmandu Valley to celebrate and pray for a good monsoon.

Police detain Tibetan exiles near border with China
Kathmandu, 26 June(Dainikee)
Nepalese police arrested nine Tibetan exiles Friday who were trying to make their way to the Tibetan border as part of their Free Tibet campaign. A group of several dozen Tibetan exiles hired a bus in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu and were on their way to the Tibetan border town of Khasa when they were stopped by the police at Andheri, about 100 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu, officials said.

Nepali arrested for running underground bank in Japan
Kathmandu, 12 June(Dainikee)
A Nepali part-time worker in Suzuka, Mie Prefecture, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of running an underground bank and sending money to Nepal without a license in violation of the banking law, police said.
Remittance records relating to multiple accounts managed by Sudish Thapa Magar, 30, showed that a total of around 3.3 billion yen.

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Tetsuko visits Nepal
Kathmandu, 10 June(Dainikee)
Just days after being honoured for her 25 years of dedicated service to the world’s children as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi made her 29th trip to visit UNICEF programmes by travelling to Nepal.
Her first stop was at a reintegration programme for children previously associated with armed groups.

Himalayas see 780 ascents in spring season
KATHMANDU, June 10
The spring mountaineering season recorded 780 ascents from 98 different expeditions from Nepali side in three-month period in March-May, 2009, said officials at Nepali Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation.
Mt. Qomolangma continued to receive the highest number of climbers -- 284 from 29 different expeditions.
